X-33 Internet Cameras
NASA X-33 program office has placed two digital cameras linked to the World Wide Web above the X-33 assembly floor in Palmdale, Calif. The two cameras-placed in opposing corners high above the X-33 assembly structures-will capture digital images every 15 minutes as the X-33 is assembled over the course of the next year. Each morning the previous day's images will be posted on the Web site, allowing people to check on the progress of the vehicle through its roll. The cameras will capture all the major integration milestones in the fast-paced assembly schedule, such as the installation of the aluminum liquid oxygen tank in early 1998, the liquid hydrogen tanks, the X-33's two linear aerospike engines, and eventually the final installation of the vehicle's rugged thermal protection system. The NASA X-33 program office also worked with the Air Force Research Laboratory (formerly Phillips Lab) to place a digital camera at the X-33 launch facility located on the northeast portion of Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. The
camera looks down on the launch facility from Haystack Butte and
captures images of the ongoing construction, which is scheduled
for completion in the winter of 1999. The images would be updated
daily. |
